Unicorn Birthday Card

Customize your birthday presents with this easy to do unicorn birthday card!

Hello Friends!

Birthday celebrations are so much fun! The vibe, cake, friends and…presents (heheh don’t tell anyone I said that!). When gifting a birthday present I always like to think about how I can personalize the gift. One way to do so is by making your own birthday card!

Today on the blog, I will be showing you how to create a really cute and super fun unicorn birthday card! This is a trendy card that could be used for any age group in mind (both the young and old at heart!). Read on to see how you can create your unicorn birthday card for your next birthday gift.

  • Canson Mixed Media Paper
  • Tombow Mono Drawing Pencil
  • Tombow Dual Brush Pens (I used 993, 725, 723, 195, 606, 055, 452)
  • Tombow Fudenosuke Brush Pen (I used the soft tip)
  • Tombow Mono Drawing Pen (I used size 05)
  • Tombow Mono Eraser

  • Add glitter!
  • Use crazy scissors to cut around the edges of the card for a different feel and look.
  • Use a piece of scrap paper underneath your hand to ensure the pencil or ink does not smudge.

1. Draw the Unicorn

Taking a piece of Canson mixed media paper, fold in half. This will be your card. Start off my drawing your design with the Tombow mono drawing pencil. Sketch out the artwork for the unicorn and think about where you would want to place your lettering. I choose this design for a unicorn as I thought it was a bit unique. I used this design as reference when sketching my unicorn. I like to reference other artwork as it provides guidance when sketching.

2. Add Colour

Once you’ve finished sketching the artwork, it’s time to add some colour to the design! I loved the idea of the unicorn having colourful hair, so I choose different Tombow dual brush pens colours for the hair. I choose 993 for the horn and 723 for the ears and cheeks.

3. Add Happy Birthday Lettering

After the ink has dried from adding colour, next is lettering your birthday message. I lettered ‘happy birthday’ to keep things simple. I used the Tombow fudenosuke brush pen to letter. Keep in mind the space you have to work with. You want to pick a phrase that will fit comfortably in the space.

4. Outline

Add an outline to the artwork by using the Tombow mono drawing pen. I used the Tombow fudenosuke brush pen to outline the eyelashes, as the pen gives a more dramatic finish. Once it has dried completely, use the Tombow mono eraser to erase all of the pencil lines.

5. Add Rainbows

For a fun touch, I decided to add rainbows because unicorns and rainbows go hand in hand! I picked three colours from the Tombow dual brush pens and created three-tier rainbows, of different sizes, across the card. I also used the Tombow mono drawing pen to outline the rainbows as well.

That’s it! I hope you try this idea for a DIY birthday card. As a creative, I would love to receive this as a birthday card!

If you try this project, I would love to see what you come up with. Tag me in your creations! I am interested to see what unicorn designs you create.
