Here is my step by step guide on how to create beautiful watercolour tags for less than $20 using craft supplies from Michaels craft stores!
Hello Friends!
Today’s blog tutorial is a bit different. I’m going to be starting a new series on the blog called, ‘Make It With Michaels’! In this series, for each tutorial I will purchase supplies from a Michaels craft store for a total cost under a certain price point. With these supplies, I will show you a crafting tutorial. Sounds like fun, right! I hope you are as excited as I am!
For the first craft tutorial in the ‘Make It With Michaels’ series, I will be showing how to make DIY watercolour tags. Read on to see how!
Supplies from Michaels
- Recollection Tags ($4.40 – I got them on sale)
- Artist Loft Watercolour Palette ($7)
- Black Fine Tip Sharpie Pen ($2.49)
- Rhinestone Stickers ($1)
Total Cost: $14.89
Other Supplies
- Container for water
- Water
- Scrap Paper
Step 1: Watercolour Background
Using the brush included in the Artist Loft watercolour palette and water, choose some colours and create backgrounds on the tag. You will want to place the tag on top of scrap paper as the watercolour can become a bit messy.
Be creative and have some fun! There are no rules as to what types of backgrounds you can create. Pictured below are some ideas that I came up with.

Left to Right: Rainbow, light yellow background with spots of colour, pools of watercolour dripping down, alternating colours, pools of watercolour blown out by using a straw.
Step 2: Letter/Doodle
Once the watercolour has dried, use a black fine tip Sharpie marker to add some lettering and doodles. The best part of this project is that you can make these tags for any occasion you want! Create a thank you tag, a to and from tag, a congratulations tag – the opportunities are endless. Doodles are fun too because you can pair the lettering with a fun doodle!
Step 3: Add Stickers and String
To complete the project, add some embellishments with the rhinestone stickers. This adds a glam factor to each tag! Finally, add string to each tag and that’s it!
